Starting July 1, 2024, all middle and high school students in North Carolina will need to complete a Career Development Plan (CDP) to advance to the next grade according to the new law, N.C. Gen. Stat. § 115C-158.10. This requirement kicks in for students finishing 8th grade in the 2024-2025 school year.
NCcareers is here to make things easier. The site offers tons of information on the best career opportunities in North Carolina, including details on wages, job growth, and the number of job postings in different regions. In the Explore Occupations section, students can dive into these details.
Students can also use the Find My Interests assessments to explore their aptitudes, skills, values, personalities, and career interests. Plus, the Education and Training section helps them to determine what education, training, and certifications they might need for their chosen career path.
If students previously created an account using their CFNC username and password, all this information has been saved automatically and will easily be included in their Career Development Plan. Other details saved in their profile include their favorite occupations, post-secondary plans, and career journeys.
To meet the new legal requirements, the site will add new functionality including:
- Access via NCEdCloud
- Fields in the user’s profile to save information about:
- AP, IB, AICE, and dual enrollment classes that might lead to college credit.
- Work-based Learning
- Extracurricular activities
- Awards and recognitions
This new CDP functionality will be ready for the start of the school year in late August. We’ll show off the working prototype at the CTE Summer Conference in Winston-Salem and share more details on our social media channels on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter). Stay tuned for more updates!
