  • Computer network architects design and build data communication networks ranging from simple connections between two offices to complex multinational communication systems. To design a network that works well they must understand an organization’s goals.

    What do they typically do

    • Create a plan and layout for a data communication network
    • Present plan to management and explain why the organization should follow the plan
    • Consider information security when designing a network
    • Decide what hardware, such as routers or adaptors, and software, such as network drivers, to use to support the network
    • Determine cable layout for the building and the location of other hardware
    • Research new technology to determine the best future support for the organization
    • Design, build, or operate equipment layout models, including network hardware, software, servers, or server operation systems
    • Coordinate network operations, maintenance, repairs, or upgrades
