Substance abuse, behavioral disorder, and mental health counselors almost always work indoors in comfortable air temperatures but may sometimes travel to meet clients and patients. They work in many settings, including private practice and Employee Assistance Programs funded by employers. Working with and assisting clients who have a variety of psychological problems is a very important part of this work and can be stressful. These workers must at times make significant decisions. They generally work full time, sometimes during evenings and weekends to accommodate clients who may have job or family responsibilities.

Extensive skill, knowledge, and experience are needed. Many require more than five years of experience.

May need some on-the-job training, but most assume you will already have the required skills, knowledge, experience, and training.
